FEELING FRIGHTENED?
Isaiah 43:1-6
But now the Lord who created you, O Israel, says Don’t be afraid, for I have ransomed you; I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up-the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, your Saviour, the Holy one of Israel. I gave Egypt and Ethiopia and Seba [to Cyrus] in exchange for your freedom, as your ransom. Others died that you might live; I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me and honoured, and I love you.
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. I will gather you from east and west, from north and south. I will bring my sons and daughters back to Israel from the farthest corners of the earth.
(God created Israel and made her special to Him. He ransomed her and called her by his name. We are special to God, and He calls us by his name! When we bear his wonderful name, we must never do anything that would bring shame to it. Going through rivers of difficulty will either cause you to drown or force you to grow stronger. If you go in your own strength, you are more likely to drown. If you invite the Lord to go with you, he will protect you.)
Why does God allow natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes and pandemics?
Psalm 18:1 "Unto thee do I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.."
Dear reader, in the time of your trouble, do not roam; do not send out your sighs into vacancy; do not let your thoughts wander, as though they were looking for some one on whom to fix; for some one to whom you could tell the story of your heart's need and desolation. Fix your heart as the Psalmist did, and say, "Unto thee will I cry."... Oh! how happy is that man (or woman) who feels and knows that when trouble comes, he cannot be bewildered and confused by the stroke, no matter how heavy it may be. Sorrow-stricken he will be, but he has his resource, and he knows it, and will avail himself of it. His is no vague theory of the general sympathy of God for man; his is a knowledge of God, as a personal and feeling God; he says with the Psalmist, "Unto thee will I cry." - Phillip Bennet Power.
