FEELING LONELY?
John 14:15-21
Jesus promises the Holy Spirit
“If you love me, obey me; and I will ask the Father and he will give you another Comforter, and he will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, for it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognise him. But you do, for he lives with you as orphans in the storm-I will come to you. In just a little while I will be gone from the world, but I will still be present with you. For I will live again-and you will too. When I come back to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
(The disciples must have been perplexed, wondering how Jesus could leave them and still be with them. The Comforter-the Spirit of God himself-would come after Jesus was gone to care for and guide the disciples. This happened at Pentecost, shortly after Jesus ascended to heaven. The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us and all believers, helping us live as God wants.
Sometimes people wish they knew the future so they could prepare for it. God has chosen not to give us this knowledge-he alone knows what will happen. But he tells us all we need to know to prepare for the future: when we live by his standards, he will reveal himself to us through it, we need not fear. We don’t have to know the future to have faith in God; we have to have faith in God to be secure about our future.)
